Estes exames permitem, além do diagnóstico, o estadiamento do tumor.

Pancreatic cancer results from a disorder in the normal cell regeneration process of the tissues that form the pancreatic gland.

There are different types of pancreatic cancer. Due to the characteristics of this organ, which is mostly made up of exocrine tissue, 90% of cancers affect these exocrine cells, ie, producers of digestive enzymes, with the most frequent pancreatic cancer being adenocarcinoma. Only about 10% of cases are cancers centered on endocrine cells.
In Portugal, a thousand seven hundred new cases of pancreatic cancer appear every year, according to data from Globocan 2020, a project by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, an organization that belongs to the World Health Organization.

Several risk factors are known: smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, high-fat diet, chronic pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus, age (most often from 50-60 years old), genetic alterations and family history and some types of pancreas cysts.

Possible symptoms are: jaundice, choluria (dark urine), faecal acolia (clear stools), itchy skin, abdominal pain, back pain, nausea, bloating, poor appetite and weight loss, tiredness, asthenia or recent diagnosis of diabetes .

The diagnosis is usually achieved with the use of computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and echoendoscopy. The latter allows the performance of biopsies to obtain the histological diagnosis, which allows for an adequate treatment. These tests allow, in addition to diagnosis and the staging of the tumor.

As for pancreatic cancer screening, there is no defined program for the general population, as screening is not effective. In specific subgroups of patients at high risk (because of family history or the identification of certain hereditary syndromes), a screening program may be indicated.

Treatment depends on the histological type of tumor and its staging. It consists of surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.
