This is a multidisciplinary area that ensures the correct treatment of injured people, from the time of the accident, until, whenever possible, their professional reintegration, respecting a set of procedures and clinical assistance.

ANAESTHESIOLOGY Anaesthesiology is the speciality which acts to reduce or eliminate pain in patients who are submitted to surgical procedures or diagnostic examinations.

Angiologia e a Cirurgia Vascular act together. While Angiology is the specialty dedicated to the clinical treatment of diseases which involve the blood and lymphatic vessels, vascular surgery provides for their surgical treatment.

CARDIOLOGY Cardiology is the specialty which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases.

Cardiothoracic Surgery is the specialty which deals with the surgical treatment of cardiovascular and thoracic illnesses.

General Surgery is the specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the digestive, endocrine and metabolic system, or obesity, breast pathology and hernias, using classical approaches and techniques or the laparoscopic route.

Maxillo-facial Surgery is the specialty devoted to the treatment of diseases related to problems of the face, the oral cavity and the cervical region.

Paediatric Surgery is the specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the newborn, children and young people up to the age of 18.

Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery is the specialty which is dedicated to the surgical treatment of congenital and acquired diseases and malformations, traumatic lesions of the skin and appendices, in their aesthetic, morphological and functional aspects.

The Endocrinologist specialises in diagnosing and treating tumours and hormonal dysfunctions (malfunction) of glands such as the thyroid, pituitary gland, adrenal gland or pancreas.

Medical Oncology studies and treats different types of cancer.

Orthopaedics is the specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the locomotor system, such as bones, muscles, ligaments and joints.

Otorhinolaryngology is the specialty which is dedicated to the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of illnesses related to the ears, nose, throat (pharynx and larynx), neck and sleep-disordered breathing.

Paediatrics is the specialty dedicated to the care of children and adolescents, either preventatively or curatively.

Pneumology is the specialty dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the respiratory system.

Psychology is the specialty dedicated to the study and analysis of behaviour and mental processes.

Psychiatry is the specialty dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental and behavioural disorders.

Rheumatology is the specialty dedicated to the treatment of diseases affecting the joints, bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments, called rheumatic diseases.

Senology is the sub-specialty dedicated to the diagnosis, study and treatment of breast illnesses.

Urology is the specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the male and female urinary system and the male genital tract.

Centro de Cirurgia de Obesidade e Metabólica – HIA

A Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS), define a obesidade como uma acumulação anormal ou excessiva de gordura corporal, que pode atingir graus capazes de afetar a saúde.

É uma doença crónica, de origem multifatorial e pode causar outras doenças ou agravar algumas pré-existentes, tais como Hipertensão Arterial, Diabetes, Doença Cardiovascular, Apneia do Sono, Doença Hepática não alcoólica, Doença Osteoarticular, Tumores Malignos.

A prevalência de obesidade tem aumentado em todo o mundo, tendo Portugal uma das maiores taxas na Europa.

Segundo o Instituto Nacional de Estatística, em 2019, mais de metade da população portuguesa tinha excesso de peso e 16,9% era obesa.

Em termos regionais, o Algarve tem o nível mais baixo de obesidade (13,6%) e a região dos Açores o mais elevado (25,3%).

A obesidade classifica-se segundo a OMS em três classes, segundo o chamado Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC), que é uma relação entre o peso e a altura do individuo. Considera-se obesa a pessoa que apresenta um IMC igual ou superior a 30 Kg/m2.

No tratamento da obesidade existem várias alternativas possíveis, desde a simples alteração nutricional “dieta”, passando pela terapêutica farmacológica, até à cirurgia.

 

Quais os doentes com indicação para cirurgia de obesidade ou bariátrica?

Só são candidatos a cirurgia, os obesos da classe 3, também chamada de Obesidade Mórbida ou os da classe 2, mas já com outras doenças associadas.

O Hospital Internacional dos Açores (HIA), recentemente inaugurado em São Miguel, criou um centro de tratamento multidisciplinar de obesidade e outras doenças metabólicas, como a diabetes, a dislipidémia, etc.

O Centro de Cirurgia de Obesidade e Metabólica, CCOM-HIA, é coordenado pelo Dr. Ângelo Ferreira, cirurgião geral, com vasta experiência na área e reúne uma equipa médica e de enfermagem, multidisciplinar que engloba cirurgia, endocrinologia, gastrenterologia, psicologia, nutrição, imagiologia, anestesiologia, cardiologia, pneumologia e cirurgia plástica.

O HIA está dotado de equipamento médico-cirúrgico da mais elevada qualidade, em concordância com os centros de excelência de cirurgia de obesidade de todo o mundo, permitindo assim o tratamento mais adequado a cada doente, seguindo as indicações internacionalmente aceites.

Estão assim criadas as condições para que os doentes obesos dos Açores, possam ser tratados na região, com a excelência exigível, obtendo resultados sobreponíveis aos dos mais reconhecidos centros mundiais.
